Which Roof Types are Best for You?
Each new roof material has advantages in terms of price, appearance, longevity and maintenance. We’ll help you decide on colors, grade – even whether you can switch from one type to another.
Asphalt – This is the material that is used on 90 percent of new residential construction in the US. It is available as a laminated product and in many different colors and patterns. Warranties can be as long as 50 years.
Composition – These are designer or architectural roof types that are dimensional in appearance and often have varied color patterns. Composition roofs are offered with long limited-lifetime warranties.
Cedar shakes and shingles – Traditional wood shingles of red cedar are a tough building product that looks natural and is resistant to decay, mold and insect damage. Standard shingles are cut and tapered and lay flat in rows. Shake shingles have a slightly irregular rustic look. Both types are a dusty rose or honey color when installed, and then turn a lovely silvery gray after weathering.
Slate – There is nothing that can compare to the natural beauty of slate. It is a classic look on many different styles of home. Slate roof types come in gray, red, brown, green and a combination of colors. Shingle styles range from Victorian half-round to straight edge.
Metal shingle – These come in coated steel and aluminum and take on the appearance of many other roof types, like ceramic tile and wood shake. When properly installed, the shingles can withstand winds of 130 mph without lifting. Metal shingles can outlive the house that that they are installed on.
Standing seam metal – Well-known for its wide variety of designer colors, it is rugged and easily sheds snow loads. It is a good choice for homes where a contemporary feel is wanted in a surface that will never wear out.
Commercial Roof Types
The choices are so varied, they provide a challenge to the builder, building owner or designer. Some of the roofing projects we tackle include:
Low-sloped roofs – A nearly flat surface is the most common commercial surface. Roof types for these applications can be built-up, TPO, EPDM “rubber roof,” PVC or tar and gravel. We have the right solution for every flat roof.
Standing seam metal - Metal adds architectural interest while being low-maintenance. We have them available in an array of different colors. For lower slopes, metal shingles can keep water out effectively.
